In class today students worked in groups to identify certain characteristics of mollusks, echinoderms, and arthropods. Students wrote the characteristics on their paper and then shared their findings with the whole group. Learn more about these characteristics on pp. 66-67.

Today we learned about simple invertebrates in Science class. We looked at pictures of our trip last week to Assateague Island to recall some invertebrates we touched with our own hands. In the picture to the left a student is holding a mole crab. In the picture below I am holding a jelly fish. We also saw blue crabs and ghost crabs. Learn more about simple invertebrates on pp.64-65! Please also review past vocabulary words with your children whenever you get a chance. Its hard to retain all those words without a little review. We will continue to review games in the classroom like "Center Piece", but the more you can do at home the better! Today in Science we started our Vascular Plant Experiment. Students began the experiment and wrote down their materials and hypothesis. Ask you children tonight what their hypothesis was and what they hope to see tomorrow. Check back tomorrow for our conclusion and analysis! Students also read about plant stems and leaves on pp. 54-56 today. Read it with them tonight and quiz them on the various parts of a plant! In groups today students arranged animals according to similarities they observed in each one. Later students read in their Science textbooks how animals were classified and given their scientific names. Discuss with your children how animals are given their scientific names and grouped by common characteristics from species to kingdoms on pp. 40 and 41! Carson, Imani, and Breana discuss what makes something alive. Today students worked and groups and made educated guesses as to what qualifed something as "alive". After some great discussions and reporting out to the larger group students then read in their Science books "Five Characteristics of Living Things". Quiz your children on those five characteristics tonight! The answers can be found on p. 39! Karolina and Sade observing plant cells. One Monday a month the fifth grade will be enjoying a lab acitivity in the new "Sky Lab" with Middle School Science teacher, Mr. Hendrick. Yesterday students compared plants cells of the Elodea with their animal cells from their own cheeks. Students worked in pairs and used microscopes for their research. Please ask your children to name the different componets of the microscope as well as to compare and contrast the plant and animal cells! |
